How good is Dirk?

OAKLAND, CA - APRIL 27: Dirk Nowitzki #41 of ...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Dirk Nowitzki has been one of the top 15 players in the NBA for awhile now. I'd argue he has now graduated to top 5. You MUST get this guy some help in the offseason. Miami got Shaq to help Wade. Championship. The Celtics got Garnett to help Pierce. Championship. The Lakers got Kobe, Gasol. They are on their way to a second NBA finals soon.

The Mavs are a #2 away from being a serious contender. Terry isn't it. Kidd, nope. Josh Howard. Are you kidding me?

Dirk is better now than he's ever been. Don't waste it.

-23? Ridiculous!

MIAMI - JANUARY 18: Head coach Rick Carlisle o...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

The Mavs are, like, 1-16 in playoff games Dan Crawford officiates. Even Denver fans would admit for them to shoot 23 more free throws than the Mavericks yesterday is absurd.

The Mavericks were called for 29 fouls. How can people be saying today that they should have been more physical? When they are calling touch fouls on you and letting alot go at the other end of the court, there isn't much you can do. If the Mavs had answered the Nuggets play, they all would have fouled out by the 3rd quarter.

Don't get mad, get smart. When you see Dan Crawford officiating a Maverick playoff game, bet the other team.

Carlisle, where are you?

MIAMI - APRIL 13: Head Coach Rick Carlisle of ...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Make no mistake, the Mavs lost game 1. They would have, no matter the coach. But Rick Carlisle had his worst game of the playoffs. This loss is on him as much as anyone else on the team.

He was SO good vs. the Spurs I got spoiled. In this game, he waited to long too use his timeouts. And why he never put Dampier back in, I'll never know. Hollins was clearly in over his head in this one. Rookie/Energy players are always best used at home, not on the road.

WAKE UP, RICK! George Carl has proven he can be outcoached in the playoffs during his career. You have proven you can outcoach. We have to get a coaching edge in this series to win. Head up, Denver vs. Dallas, Denver wins.

Game 2 is Tuesday. I sure hope Rick can make it.

Denver crybabies!!

I already HATE Denver. I have no problem with a physical team. Even a dirty team is OK. But to complain to the officials after EVERY call against you is just weak. Especially since the Nuggets HAVE committed all the fouls called and a few they haven't. I sure hope the refs aren't swayed by that crap. But they likely will be.

Payback time!!!

'ClassicImage via Wikipedia

I remember watching Fat Lever and Alex English as Denver Nuggets. They were great players. Then we got them. They put on a maverick uniform, and promptly started sucking. They were the beginning of the darkest times for Mavs fans, the 90's.

It's payback time. Mavs in 7!

Mavs Advance!!!

DALLAS - APRIL 22: Dirk Nowitzki #41 of the D...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Yesterday, I called for Dirk to step up in game 5. Your team had come this far with a minimal contribution from you. The Spurs were a wounded team and it was time for the superstar to step up and put a nail in the coffin.

Well, I think the final nail came when J Kidd put in that dagger of a three as the 3rd quarter ran out. But 11-17, 31 points and 9 rebounds is EXACTLY what Dirk needed tonight. He let Denver know he and the Mavs are ready for round 2. Great job!!

Dirk, It's Time

MILWAUKEE - FEBRUARY 13: Dirk Nowitzki #41 of...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

The Mavericks lead this series 3-1 with Dirk averaging 16 points. He has passed out of double teams, rebounded, and hit key shots late in games. He has lifted the confidence of his teammates. And he has underperformed.

In round 2, Dirk Nowitzki will need to average in the high 20's for this team to have a chance. I do not buy "the defense is keying on stopping me" excuse. The Mavericks are keying on stopping Tony Parker in this series. Everyone keys on stopping Kobe.

Superstars know when to get their team involved, and they know when it's time to take over. Dirk, it's time to take over.

Draft Day Disaster

MIAMI - FEBRUARY 03: Hall of Fame inductee, M...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

I love my Cowboys, but WHAT? You are an average team in a tough division. You need talent. In a draft with less talent than in past years, you must trade up. But you move down? Another example of this team thinking they are better than their 9-7 record. If you were better than 9-7, WHY DID YOU FINISH 9-7?

This draft day disaster started last year for the Cowboys, when they overpaid for Roy Williams. The price for Anquan Bolden makes that obvious. It's nothing new. They overpaid for TO and Crayton. And they overvalue Hurd and Austin. And let Antonio Bryant leave for next to nothing.

In fact, the last really good receiver decision made at Valley Ranch came when Tom Landry drafted Michael Irvin.

Mavericks up 3-1, but...

SAN ANTONIO - APRIL 18: Guard Jason Kidd #2 o...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

OK, I'm all for the mavs winning. I'm clapping and yelling during the games along with everyone else. But when I read how this team has come together so well it can beat big time opponents without Dirk and JET, I hesitate. I hear, "The mavs win with defense and their role players have really stepped up." and I get a bit nervous... and nauseous.

The truth is, the Spurs have been AWFUL. Duncan can't defend the paint like he used to. Watch the tapes from 2006. Devin Harris would streak into the paint and Duncan would swat his shot away no matter where Devin went. Fast forward to 2009. Do you really believe Barea is faster then Devin was/is? Old gimpy knees simply can't move. He can't help on defense. The Spurs finished third in the West, and their record was pretty freakin' good without Ginobili. What happened to them?

The Mavs need to get their stars back on track. They need to play like they did in that stretch during the last weeks of the regular season. Playing a bit better than a crappy team is working right now. Round 2 won't be so kind.

First Post

I moved to Dallas in 1980, the very year the Dallas Mavericks came into existence. For almost 30 years, I have been a fan of the Mavericks and Cowboys. When the Stars finally arrived in 1993, I became a hockey fan as well.

I love talking sports. More accurately, I love to argue sports. This blog isn't going to be game stats and updates. It's going to be opinionated. I'm thoughtful, knowledgeable, and quite twisted. I love my Dallas teams, but I'm no cheerleader. If you go 9-7, then you're 9-7. Talent wins playoff games. You didn't win any playoff games? Then you ain't got enough talent. Go git some!

You can find out if the Mavs won or who the Cowboys traded for anywhere. I'm going to tell you why the Mavs won. I'll tell you why the latest Cowboys trade was genius, or Jerridiculous.

If you agree with me, let me know. Think I'm an idiot? Tell me why. Above all else, let's keep it clean and have fun.
